Hike to the Pfaffenseen (2222 m)

The two lakes above Schlinig are located near the gently rounded Watles and offer a magnificent view of the Ötztal Alps.

According to legend, in place of the lakes a long time ago there was a stately farmhouse whose owner would not be dissuaded from working on Sundays; consequently, the farm sank into the lake.

The Pfaffenseen in the picturesque Upper Vinschgau represent a hidden paradise for nature enthusiasts. A well-developed, 5 kilometer long path leads from Prämajur directly to the foot of the majestic Waltes peaks.

This hike is particularly recommended at the end of the summer season, although it offers an unforgettable experience throughout the entire summer half-year. Autumn conjures up a fascinating play of colors in the landscape with its brightly colored larches and the diverse high-alpine flora. Our starting point is the parking lot of the Watles chairlift in Prämajur, an idyllic hamlet nestled between Burgeis and Schlinig. First, we head towards Rameishof and then follow the marked forest road (trail no. 20) uphill. Soon the dense larch forests are reached.

From this forest road, trail no. 3 leads us up to the Höfer Alm. From here, it is only a short march to the mountain station of the Watles lift at the Plantapatsch Restaurant, which is located just above the tree line. After about a 20-minute walk, we reach our destination. The ascent to the two Pfaffenseen is truly worthwhile. The rugged beauty of the landscape, coupled with the sky-blue reflection in the clear waters of the lakes, offers a breathtaking panorama. We circle the larger of the Pfaffenseen and let ourselves be captivated by the impressions of an enchanted mountain world.

The smaller Pfaffensee also presents itself from its best side. For the return journey, the same path can be chosen. Those who want to shorten the descent have the option to glide down into the valley with the Watles chairlift, which is usually operated until the second half of October.
