Pleasure from South Tyrol: The Barbian Plum

Already since the Middle Ages, the Barbian plums have been thriving on the slopes of Barbian, which also played a significant role as an export good until the 20th century.

But even today, the popular stone fruit, which is very rich in minerals and vitamins, is cultivated on numerous farms and subsequently processed. Thus, the plum as jam, with duck breast, or even in risotto gives many dishes a fine flavor, especially popular are also desserts such as plum strudel or plum dumplings.

The Barbian plum contains a lot of minerals and vitamins as well as a variety of secondary plant compounds. Therefore, it is considered a true fitness fruit. Due to its high potassium content, the metabolism and kidney activity are stimulated and fat breakdown or detoxification are promoted. Furthermore, the Barbian plum also has a high sorbitol content, which is also used as a substitute sweetener. The fruits also contain numerous trace elements, almost all B vitamins as well as the provitamin A, which strengthens the immune and nervous system or the resistance to moods and stress.

Barbian Plum Trail

In Barbian there is even a dedicated Plum Trail, the name of which can be traced back to the plum trees that can be admired along the route. In addition, various information boards also present a lot of interesting facts about the Barbian plum. The hike, which lasts a total of two hours, is especially beautiful in April or May, as the plum trees are in full bloom during this period. But a wonderful panorama can also be enjoyed in summer or autumn. The Plum Trail starts at the village square of Barbian, then it continues towards the lower village at Feltuner. At the weather cross, you then hike upwards to the Frühaufhof or to the Haus Urban, until you reach a fork in the road. There you turn right and return to the starting point through Oberdorf.
